Much has been made, and rightly, of the contrast between the enormous, breathtaking scale and vision of The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the exquisite little charmer Whale Rider. Each story carries its own sense of wonder; one in monumental scale, the other in intimate style.

Far, far away from Hollywood, another reminder of native New Zealand talent is to arise. Hamilton is to erect a statue in honour of its ex-patriate son Richard O'Brien, the writer and one of the stars of the The Rocky Horror Show and its cinematic spin-off, The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Thirty years on, that movie may seem less audacious than once it did, but the makers of this year's Oscar nominees should be well pleased if their works are still so fondly regarded in three decades' time.

In the case of The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Whale Rider they probably will be.
