The city has a more esoteric claim to fame as the home town of Richard O'Brien, who created the Rocky Horror Show and gave a memorable performance as the ambi-sexual Riff Raff. Presumably there was no controversy about the cow and sheep sculptures but a proposal to erect a Riff Raff statue has not won universal approval.
The editor of the Waikato Times said it was the biggest controversy of his tenure. One city councillor opposed the spending of public funds on the project as it would label Hamilton as a haven for transsexuals. It would turn the peaceful community, he claimed, into "Tranny Town". [snip]
