GIVEN what it portrays, I suppose it's only fitting that the giant statue proposed for Ngaruawahia should be in the wars before work on it has even started.

The offbeat Riff Raff statue may have caused a stir when it was mooted for Hamilton, but those who devised it look positively tame by comparison to their Ngaruawahia counterparts. At eight metres, that town's Maori warrior will be so very much bigger - bigger even than Paeroa's L&P bottle or Te Kuiti's shearing statue. Whereas Riff Raff stands roughly person-sized in his quiet corner of Victoria St.
