Hamilton should give Richard O’Brien ‘the freedom of the city’ and Hamiltonians should write in support of his Kiwi citizenship bid, says Riff Raff statue initiator Mark Servian.
Rocky Horror Show creator O’Brien is immortalised in bronze as Riff Raff on Hamilton’s Victoria Street, but has been denied the New Zealand citizenship rubberstamp. The 68-year-old is having to appeal the Immigration Service decision to Minister Jonathan Coleman.
“Richard O’Brien is a New Zealander in our hearts, regardless of what the bureaucrats say,” declares Mr Servian.
“I call on the Hamilton City Council to immediately offer Richard O’Brien ‘the freedom of the city’ to back his NZ citizenship application,” says Mr Servian.
“Hamiltonians can individually show their support by writing to Immigration Minister Jonathon Coleman to request that Richard O'Brien be granted NZ citizenship forthwith!”
They can do this c/- Parliament, Wellington, no stamp required, or via firstname.lastname@example.org.”
Mark Servian is a candidate for the Hamilton City Council’s East Ward in this October’s local bodies’ election, and would be moving a Freedom-of-the-City motion for Richard O’Brien on the council right now if he was already on!
