Times Diary: Hamilton Discount

A Diary tipster grabbing breakfast at a cafe off Sydney's Oxford St got a pleasant surprise last week. Talking to the owner, she was given a 10 per cent discount on her brekkie when he discovered she was staying in a block of apartments next door. The deal got even sweeter when he latched on to her Kiwi accent, and apparently the conversation went something like this: Cafe owner: 'So, where in New Zealand are you from?' Our tipster: 'Oh, we're from Hamilton.' Cafe owner: 'Hamilton?! My kitchen-hand's from Hamilton. You've got the Riff Raff statue, right? Great, 15 per cent discount!!' How's that for service?
