Worthy subjects

It is ironic the death of Michael King has drawn attention again to Hamilton City Council's decision to erect a statue of Richard O'Brien.

I note the Waikato Times' eulogy of Dr King and later a photograph of the bronze horse erected in Cambridge, entirely appropriate to the community concerned.

Therefore would it not be more sensible a change of decision regarding the subject of the statue should be in the minds not only of the council, but of the public as well. The merits of Dr King were displayed in the Times at the announcement of his tragic death and his association with the university is well known.

One could also mention Frank Sargeson, born here, and a subject of one of Dr King's biographies, to say nothing of his importance to New Zealand literature.

Now for the sciences. Where is the memorial to the late Dr C P McMeekin, whose research raised Ruakura to world status. Surely these three people are worthy of a statue as well as Mr O'Brien?

Greg Broadmore's painting of Riff Raff

RIFF RAFF: Who'll want to see Hamilton's new statue?

New statue a horror show?

This statue of Riff Raff should be placed out of sight of the public. Only the riff raff will want to view it.
