Hamilton's Operatic Society wants to stage a 30th anniversary production of the Rocky Horror Picture Show next year and has the support of its creator Richard O'Brien.
The society's board chairman Paul Mitchell said the total budget for the show would be about $500,000 –- around double what the society would spend on a big show such as Grease.
"It's a very exciting prospect for the Hamilton Operatic Society, the Waikato and New Zealand because the cast of the movie is likely to be here on Halloween, which is going to be our final night of our season," Mr Mitchell said.
Mitchell said O'Brien had told him he believed the rightful place for the 30th anniversary celebrations was in Hamilton, and he would like to have some input into the show.
"I realise the privilege we have got to involve Richard O'Brien in this production . . . it will be the event of the decade for Hamilton."
Mr Mitchell said once the society had rights it would seek sponsorship, confirm production personnel and audition a cast.
